Julia, Tinsel, Chaske and Alex in InStyle

"It feels like family."
According to Alex Meraz, a 25-year-old who appears in the upcoming third installment of the blockbuster Twilight series, the actors who play the so-called “Wolf Pack”—a group of American Indian shape-shifters—became as close as their characters almost as soon as they arrived on set. “We really rely on each other for support,” he said. “It feels like family.” His co-stars Tinsel Korey, 30, Chaske Spencer, 35, and Julia Jones, 29, agreed: “I felt, kind of instantly, like we had so much in common,” Jones said. Being in an intensely-hyped Twilight flick, she explained, “is a really specific kind of experience. We all feel we’re in the same boat.”
"I was bagging groceries."
Acting wasn’t Meraz’s first ambition: At eighteen, he left his home in Mesa, Arizona to join the circus. “Literally,” he insisted. “I was a dancer, and I wanted to train to be in Cirque de Soleil.” Things didn’t exactly go according to plan. “I moved to San Francisco, thinking that I would take the city by storm; cut to two weeks later, and I’m bagging groceries at Whole Foods.” Luckily, it wasn’t long before a chance meeting with an older actor who ultimately became his mentor led to a small role in Terrence Malick’s The New World. In Eclipse he plays Paul, a friend of Taylor Lautner’s Jacob. “On New Moon, we could hang out—go to dinner, go to the gym. But by the time we shot this movie, we had to do all this secret text messaging, and meet at abandoned restaurants. It was pretty bizarre, but I’m proud of him.”

“This is you. This is your role.”

The Eclipse casting directors weren’t the first to think Jones, a part-time model and Columbia graduate, was perfect for the part of Leah, the only female wolf. “One of my closest friends read the books before the first movie came out,” she reported, “and she always said, ‘This is going to be you. This is your role.’” Nevertheless, Jones admits to some trepidation about taking on Twilight. “Everybody has an idea of who the character is in their mind, and there’s no way I’m going to be that person for everyone,” she explained. “I just have to hope that the way I bring Leah to life wins people over.”
"She's the caretaker."

Brooklyn-based Spencer admitted that he auditioned for “pretty much all of the [Quileute] roles” before finally being cast as pack leader Sam. “I looked in the book, and saw how big a part it was, and was like, ‘I’ll take it,’” he said. Korey’s character, Emily, is Sam’s fiancĂ©e: A Makah Indian, she’s actually not able to transition into a wolf. “She’s sort of the caretaker,” Korey noted, before adding that she doesn’t feel she missed out as a result of playing the only non-magical member of the pack. “I don’t feel any different from them. The wolf scenes are all CGI anyway!”
“A new Native America.”
Spencer said he’s played his share of historical American Indian characters—what he half-jokingly called “the leather and feather” parts. “What’s cool about New Moon,” he explained, “is that we’re in a contemporary setting.” Korey agreed: “I think it’s important for people to know that there is a Native American community that’s very vibrant, and very now. We’re sort of like a new Native America.”

"Twilight's a star-maker."
All four of the actors reported that getting cast in a Twilight flick has already had a transformative effect on their careers: Alex Meraz recently nabbed a starring role in the new film from Kids auteur Larry Clark, and Julia Jones’s next movie is the big-budget video game adaptation Jonah Hex. “It’s a star-maker,” Spencer said of the series. “It’s definitely opened a lot of doors.”

Tinsel Korey honored by her High School

Tinsel Korey has been honored by her high school in Toronto on their Wall of Fame for their fiftieth anniversary. According to the William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute website:

tinselalmamater

“In honour of Mackenzie’s 50th Anniversary, we’ve created a Wall of Fame to feature 50 Mackenzie alumni who have contributed to society in a significant way.

The possibilities are endless: Education, Sciences, Entrepreneurship, Sports, Media, Politics, Humanitarianism, Entertainment, Arts, Health Care, Retail, Technology, Law, Real Estate etc. There isn’t an aspect of our community that hasn’t benefited from Mackenzie’s alumni.”

The Wall of Fame entry for Tinsel (who according to the high school had a slightly different name when attending there) reads:

“Tinsel Korey, born Harsha Patel, is an up and coming actress and musician now living in Vancouver, British Columbia.

In 2003 she landed her first professional TV role, playing a bridesmaid named Jen on the FOX series ‘Tru Calling’ starring Eliza Dushku. In 2004 while shooting Spielberg’s TV mini-series ‘Into the West’ she composed a song of the same title hoping to get it on the soundtrack. Although it did not make it into the movie, it started to become an underground hit. The song eventually caught the attention of actor/producer Jennifer Podemski (Dance me Outside, The Rez) who invited Korey to perform it on the 2008 Aboriginal Achievement Awards. 2008 would end up becoming a very busy year for the artist, as she traveled throughout the southwest performing her songs in various venues. As well an independent film called ‘Mother’s & Daughters? directed by Carl Bessai and completely improvised by the cast (Tantoo Cardinal, Babs Chula, Gabrielle Rose, Camille Sullivan, Tiffany Lyndall-Knight and Tinsel Korey) would be invited into the 08′ Toronto International Film Festival.

In 2009 Tinsel finally made it to Los Angeles where she would audition for the role of a lifetime. Casting director Rene Haynes would bring Korey in to audition for the part of Emily in the movie ‘New Moon’. After weeks of auditioning approx. 800 girls, Summit Entertainment announced that Miss Korey would be the one to bring the beautifully scarred character to life on screen.

Off-screen Tinsel also enjoys painting, and working with youth. She travels all throughout North America teaching acting and music to Native American Youth who want to get into the entertainment industry. The course focuses on the art aspect, helping them bring out their own unique talents.”

This beats doing homework!
More Eclipse promo shots! But why aren't they shirtless!? Julia and Tinsel are stunning, still. Unlike the New Moon promo shots, this one actually looks like Bronson. Haha

Favorite Quest Crew moment :
The moment that always sticks out for me is when, I believe it was Steve was flipped over two of the other members in the dance number with the piano. I remember watching it, thinking what the heck?! How did he do that? Cause it’s not like he had room to run and jump. He jumped from a stationary position. Epic Quest Crew moment I think.

Favorite Quest Crew dance move?
I don’t really have a favorite move. I can just appreciate their dance style as a whole. I love the fact that they use theatrics in their performances. They paint a picture and tell a story. Also they have a pretty sexybadass sense of style.

If you could hang out with Quest Crew for a day, what would you do?
Hmmmm. Probably something that involves competition. They seem like they shine when they’re put to the test. A day at Dave and Busters sounds like it could be fun, or a UFC match. :)

Which member are you most like?
Well, I don’t really know any of them personally. But if I had to choose just by instinct, I’d probably say “Hok”. There’s something about him that just stands out. I have a feeling that he’s very artsy; so I could relate to that.
